Description
View of Schroon Mountain, Essex County, New York, After a Storm sets a pointed mountain beneath blue-gray clouds and a quieter pink glow. Silhouetted trees frame the left, while autumn reds brighten the lower landscape and a small opening reveals water near the center. Thomas Cole lets the atmosphere change across the view, balancing the dark mountain’s weight with passages where light appears to break through.
Painted in 1838 in oil on canvas, the scene depicts the peak now known as Hoffman Mountain. Cole developed summer sketches into a studio painting with autumn color, a deliberate transformation identified by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Two Indigenous figures appear in the foreground foliage, placing human presence within a setting whose large forms and changing light remain the composition’s principal forces.
