Description
Virgin and Child Seated by a Tree brings mother and child close together beneath a sturdy trunk. The child rests against the Virgin’s face, and the folds of her robe spread through the foreground in long, angular rhythms. Small plants, stones, and a rustic fence surround the tender central gesture.
This engraving, made after 1513, is a copy after Albrecht Dürer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art lists Allaert Claesz. and Jacob Binck as possible engravers. Fine hatching gives the shaded tree and drapery depth while leaving the two faces softly illuminated.
