About Carrières Saint Denis
Claude Monet’s Carrières Saint Denis (1872) sets a riverside village above a wide band of shimmering water. Pale buildings gather along the bank, interrupted by tall, dark trees whose reflections reach into the foreground. Blue, green and gray strokes break up the river’s surface, balancing the solid shapes of the houses with a softer, shifting view below. A low sky keeps attention on this meeting of water and village. The original oil painting belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
