Description

In Church in Cassone, Gustav Klimt transforms an Italian lakeside village into a tapestry of color. Pale buildings cluster among tall, dark cypresses, their tiled roofs and sunlit walls woven into a dense pattern of green, blue and gold. A narrow strip of water anchors the scene, while the church rises above the surrounding houses.

Painted in 1913 during Klimt’s stay near Lake Garda, the work reveals his distinctive approach to landscape. Rather than opening the view toward a broad sky, he fills the composition with interlocking shapes. Architecture and foliage become equally important parts of the surface, drawing the eye from one carefully balanced passage to the next.

Also known as Kirche in Cassone and Church in Cassone—Landscape with Cypresses, the painting combines a recognizable place with Klimt’s love of ornament. Church in Cassone offers the warmth of an Italian village and the absorbing detail of a decorative pattern—a landscape to enjoy at a glance and explore more slowly.
