Description
Cottage Garden with Sunflowers surrounds the viewer with the abundance of a summer garden. Gustav Klimt fills the almost square composition with stems, leaves and small bursts of red, blue and white, while yellow sunflower heads rise above the flowers. There is little open space: the pleasure comes from looking closely and discovering how each blossom contributes to the whole.
Painted in 1906, this oil painting belongs to Klimt’s exploration of gardens and landscapes during his visits to the Attersee region of Austria. It is also known as Farm Garden with Sunflowers and Bauerngarten mit Sonnenblumen. The Belvedere now dates the work to 1906; older references may give 1907. Its richly patterned surface shows another side of an artist often associated with portraits and decorative figure paintings.
In Cottage Garden with Sunflowers, natural growth becomes an intricate arrangement of color. Deep greens give the brighter flowers room to shine without the need for a distant horizon. This floral composition offers a warm, immersive focal point for a sunroom, living area or quiet corner where botanical subjects and decorative detail feel at home.
