Description
The Little Fortune shows a nude female figure balancing on a small globe, her head turned as she holds a tall staff topped with leafy forms. A length of drapery curls behind her, while her tied hair trails across the open background. With little surrounding scenery, the figure’s unstable footing and changing silhouette carry the whole composition.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving, known as The Little Fortune, gives its allegorical subject a distinctly physical character. The rounded globe provides an uncertain base beneath the body, while the staff offers a contrasting vertical line. Fine marks describe the curve of the back, the texture of hair and the folds of cloth. The image is compelling through this balance of poise and instability, presenting fortune as something both graceful and difficult to hold.
