Description
The Collector of Prints by Edgar Degas draws us into a room filled with objects made for close looking. A bearded man in a black hat leans forward, holding a small print above an open portfolio. Behind him, scattered sheets and colorful patterned pieces create a lively counterpoint to his dark coat.
The crowded surroundings suggest the pleasure of gathering, sorting, and studying images. Warm ochre walls and muted green trousers soften the deep blacks, while the man’s alert gaze brings the room’s quiet activity into focus. The portrait gives as much attention to the collector’s world as to the collector himself.
