Hamlet and His Mother

Description

Hamlet and His Mother by Eugène Delacroix brings Shakespeare’s troubled prince and Queen Gertrude into a richly colored, intimate interior. Hamlet leans forward with his sword lowered while his mother reaches toward him, their contrasting movements filling the scene with tension.

Deep red curtains and warm brown shadows enclose the figures. Glints of pale fabric and the queen’s crown emerge from the darkness, concentrating attention on gesture and expression rather than elaborate scenery. The compact composition gives the encounter the immediacy of a moment unfolding on stage.
