Description
In The Dance Class, Degas fills a rehearsal room with dancers resting, stretching and waiting around their instructor. Pale tutus stand against green walls, while a music stand and a nearby dancer bring the viewer close to the action.
The open floor draws the eye toward the gathering farther back. Small differences in posture make the scene feel unposed, revealing the pauses and everyday discipline behind a performance. The work is by Edgar Degas.
