Description
Delacroix’s Study of a Male Nude for The Death of Seneca examines an older figure through carefully modeled graphite strokes. The lifted head, extended hand and twisting torso create a pose of tense expression, while diagonal shading strengthens the body’s sense of volume.
Dating from 1838–40, the study relates to Delacroix’s treatment of The Death of Seneca. Its combination of anatomical observation and expressive gesture reveals how a single figure can carry the emotional weight of a larger scene.
