Description
Paul Gauguin’s The Yellow Christ places a bright yellow crucified figure within an autumn-colored landscape. Women in Breton dress kneel nearby, their dark clothing and white caps contrasting with orange fields and rounded trees. Strong outlines keep the separate forms distinct.
Painted in 1889, the work joins a devotional image with the recognizable countryside of Brittany. The yellow body echoes the surrounding land, connecting figure and setting through color. Gauguin gives the scene a solemn stillness through flattened space and a restrained arrangement of gestures.
