Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Memory of the Garden at Etten, also called Ladies of Arles, combines women, flowers, and a winding path in a boldly patterned garden. Two figures occupy the foreground, while another bends among plants beyond them. Deep blue, red, yellow, and green areas fit together in a composition that feels remembered rather than directly recorded.
Painted in 1888, the work brings recollection into a language of strong outlines and expressive color. The garden path and rising forms create a flowing movement behind the women. Their quiet faces contrast with the vivid setting, giving the scene a reflective character within its richly animated surface.
