Description
In Au Pied du Sinaï, large lettering shares a golden-toned cover with dark clustered forms and a low landscape at the left. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives Au Pied du Sinaï a particular graphic introduction, allowing image and written title to occupy the same surface. The design invites attention to their relationship rather than turning the named subject into an expansive landscape independent of the publication.
The 1897 lithograph is printed in five colors on vellum. Its material form gives the subject a continuing graphic presence, allowing the viewer to return to the image at another pace than a passing encounter. The work’s interest lies in the meeting of a named subject and a particular printed surface, where color takes part in the composition rather than merely adding an ornamental finish.
