Description
In Eros Vanquished, two men sit in profile, their figures sharing a cover with large lettering toward the upper right. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec connects a human encounter with the announcement of Eros Vanquished, allowing image and title to occupy one graphic surface. The seated pairing gives the publication an intimate scale, while the spare lines leave the relationship open to sustained looking.
Printed in black on wove paper in 1894, the crayon lithograph belongs to the first song-sheet edition. The men’s profiles introduce a quieter register than the bold announcement around them. Toulouse-Lautrec lets a compact drawing share space with typography, so that reading the cover and looking at its figures become connected activities, each changing the emphasis of the same surface.
