Description
Ida Heath’s dancing figure takes shape in light lines in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s print, with active legs and a green accent contributing to the theatrical scene. The body carries the suggestion of performance within a relatively spare setting. Identified as an English dancer, Heath gives the image a particular human subject rather than an anonymous emblem of movement.
Made in 1894, the print combines crayon, brush and scraper and is printed in olive green on wove paper. Toulouse-Lautrec brings performance into a material form that can be encountered beyond its original occasion, making the dancer’s presence available to a slower look. Its interest lies in the relationship between named identity and represented action. A public role gives the subject context while leaving the individual figure central within the printed image.
