Description
In Jouets de Paris, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives a richly dressed woman a large place at the left of the design. Ruffled clothing and an expansive dark hat create a striking outline, while text occupies the center and right. The represented monochrome arrangement connects a single figure with the literary identity of the printed page, letting picture and words support one another.
Dated 1901, the object is a lithograph on vellum, published by Librairie de la Madeleine. The printed image preserves one artistic contribution within the publication, giving it a separate identity that can be approached through attentive looking. Toulouse-Lautrec’s design belongs to the relationship between text and picture rather than an invented literal display of toys. The work offers an encounter with that collaborative form, where an image can accompany words while retaining its own pictorial presence.
