Description

A woman sits at a hand loom, her black robe and visible upper body placed beside the wooden mechanism that fills the other part of the scene. Kitagawa Utamaro makes weaving the subject of a close human encounter. The loom gives her activity a tangible structure, joining bodily attention to the practical work of making cloth.

Created around 1796, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its interest lies in process rather than clothing as a finished display: the material world is shown being formed through labor. Utamaro keeps the worker central while allowing the apparatus to occupy a substantial place beside her. The image gives an everyday task its own visual weight, making skill and concentration part of the scene’s intimate human presence.
