Description
Utamaro II sets an elaborately dressed courtesan beside wisteria with drooping flower clusters. Her dark floral robe extends into a sweeping hem, while a pale fan and hair ornaments add finer points of contrast. The hanging blossoms echo the downward movement of her clothing, connecting the figure with a surrounding pattern of elegant, trailing forms.
The work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. Its arrangement makes flower and fabric participate in the same visual rhythm without turning the woman into a minor feature of a garden view. Dark cloth gives her body weight, while the lighter fan and individual ornaments bring attention back toward smaller details. Utamaro II lets a richly dressed figure and a seasonal plant share the image’s graceful structure, inviting sustained attention to their different but related surfaces.
