Description
Apples turns familiar fruit into an animated study of color and weight. Rounded forms in yellow, green, and red gather against cooler blue-gray passages, their edges built from visible touches of paint. The upper and lower groups echo one another without settling into a conventional tabletop arrangement.
Paul Cézanne’s small oil painting, dated 1878–79, combines two separate studies. Its unevenly worked surface keeps the act of looking close at hand: each apple becomes a compact meeting of warm and cool color, with shape emerging through the painter’s searching marks.
