Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec brings La Goulue and her sister forward from a crowded night setting. The two women occupy the center, one with a broad gown and the other with a striped skirt, giving their figures distinct patterns. Their closeness anchors the design while the people behind them connect the pair with the wider social life of the Moulin Rouge.
Dated 1892, this impression is a lithograph printed in six colors on wove paper. Edward Ancourt printed the design, and Boussod, Valadon and Company published it, preserving distinct roles behind its creation. Toulouse-Lautrec turns an encounter associated with a particular venue into an independent graphic image. The work offers a lasting view of people within that social world, letting the named pair remain its center rather than reducing them to an anonymous crowd.
