Description
Christ Carrying the Cross by Albrecht Dürer shows Christ bending beneath the heavy timber as a crowd presses around him on the road. A kneeling woman holds a cloth before his face, creating a moment of compassion within the moving procession. Soldiers, mourners and distant buildings gather behind the central figure, while the diagonal timbers carry the weight and direction of the journey across the picture.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Small Passion brings the story close through the meeting of faces and hands. The kneeling woman’s attentive gesture contrasts with the weapons and pressure of the surrounding men. Strong contours hold the crowd together, making the small scene compelling through the opposition between force and care rather than through a distant spectacle.
