Description

A dead soldier lies amid barricade rubble in Édouard Manet’s Civil War, with broken paving, barrels and stones scattered around him. Scattered forms around him extend the sense of violence beyond one body. The lithograph confronts the suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871 through its immediate human aftermath, giving loss a stark presence instead of a triumphant public narrative.

Designed in 1871–73 and published in 1874 by Lemercier, the work is a lithograph. Its graphic medium can make darkness and exposed forms immediate, concentrating the scene without needing a fuller palette of color. The image’s interest lies in the distance between a public conflict and the particular people caught within it. A historical subject becomes a close encounter with vulnerability, giving the effects of violence a presence beyond the abstract name of the event.
