The Dead Christ with Angels

Description

The Dead Christ with Angels places the pale figure of Christ between two winged attendants, surrounded by broad folds of white cloth. Dark feathers, deep blue wings and warm robes frame the central body, creating a solemn contrast of light and shadow.

Edouard Manet gives the scene a direct physical presence through strongly modeled forms and closely observed drapery. Small stones, foliage and an inscription in the foreground extend the composition beyond the figures and invite a slower look.
