Description
In Kabuki Actor Nakamura Tomijūrō, Katsukawa Shunshō presents a low-seated or kneeling figure whose long costume sleeve creates a flowing extension of the body. The restrained position gives the portrait a different energy from a standing stage entrance. Cloth and posture work together, allowing the image’s stillness to feel deliberately held rather than empty of action.
Dated to the tenth month of 1777, the print was made in ink and color on paper. Actor images gave performances a lasting presence, preserving a figure who would otherwise be encountered only during the passing event of theater. Shunshō’s portrait keeps that individual connection clear. The work invites attention to the performer while allowing the surrounding dramatic context to remain open, rather than treating an unrecorded role as established fact.
