Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V portrays Hannya no Gorō in Shibaraku, his broad red costume spreading into an angular shape across the long sheet. White patterned sections and a hand held near the face add definition to the expansive clothing. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the actor’s theatrical presence inseparable from the bold structure of the costume, while retaining the particular identity of performer and role.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print is dated to the eleventh month of 1776. Its ink-and-color medium makes a theatrical subject available beyond the immediate event of performance, where it can be examined as a sustained visual encounter. The work invites attention to how a role associated with a named dramatic form acquires its individual human presence through one particular actor.
