Description
Ichikawa Danzō IV is the subject of this actor print by Katsukawa Shunshō, bringing a named kabuki performer into the concentrated space of an image. The bent actor wears yellow-brown patterned robes, with a hand gathered near the chest and a sword at the side. A pale ground keeps the body’s inclination clear, giving the figure an individual rhythm through a gesture that concentrates attention close to the torso.
Made in the 1770s, the nishiki-e woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Shunshō gives the performer a durable presence, allowing recognition to continue through the close experience of looking. Its interest lies in the individuality of the encounter: Danzō is not a general emblem of acting, but a person associated with a theatrical world. The work preserves that human link even when the surrounding dramatic narrative remains unnamed.
