Description

Ichikawa Yaozō II stands in a tall pale-and-red patterned robe beside large tilted written banners and a fence. The slanting signs give the surrounding space a lively structure, while the actor remains its central human presence. Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait preserves a named performer without supplying a secure dramatic role, allowing the figure and the visible setting to carry the encounter.

Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print is dated to the second month of 1770. Ink and color on paper make the theatrical subject available as a lasting image, where it can be considered outside the immediate flow of performance. The portrait invites attention to the actor as an individual, allowing the named presence to carry the encounter without an unsupported plot or role identification.
