Description

A little girl’s head turns toward the right in Édouard Manet’s print, her short hair framing the profile above a light dress. The spare setting leaves attention on the child’s face rather than a fully described setting. A few changes of line establish direction and character, giving a modest subject an immediate presence without requiring a story around her.

Created in 1861–62, the work combines etching and drypoint. The two processes bring different qualities of line to a printed image, making the figure tangible without the broader colors of a painting. Manet’s subject encourages looking on a small scale, where a child’s presence need not depend on a story imposed around her. The portrait offers a quiet kind of immediacy, making an unnamed person the center of an encounter that remains human and particular.
