Description
Pavel Filonov’s Peasant Family presents a mother, child, and older man within a densely patterned world of animals and flowers. The mother’s red clothing and the child’s pale body stand out among blue, green, and jewel-like accents. A horse at the right brings another watchful presence into the tightly woven composition.
Painted in 1914 and also known as The Holy Family, the work brings familiar family imagery into Filonov’s distinctive visual language. Human and animal figures seem bound together by the same intricate network of forms. The abundance of detail gives the scene a sense of growth, interdependence, and concentrated life.
