Description
Peter Paul Rubens’s St. Augustine presents the bishop in richly colored robes beside a small child on the shore. The saint bends toward the child with an attentive gesture, while angels appear among the clouds above. Warm gold and red drapery gives the figure a commanding presence against the cooler sky and sea.
The subject recalls the legend in which Augustine, pondering the Trinity, encounters a child trying to pour the sea into a small hole in the sand. Their exchange becomes a reflection on the limits of human understanding. Rubens gives the encounter dramatic movement while preserving a clear focus on the saint and the child.
