Description
The Figure of Religion sits with a tall cross at the left and a cup-like object raised at the right in Delacroix’s darkly washed study. Drapery surrounds the lower body above textured ground, giving the seated presence weight within the sheet. Eugène Delacroix brings the idea of Religion into human form, allowing attributes and bodily arrangement to share the work’s particular visual focus.
Dating to 1820–21, the sheet uses pen and brush with iron gall ink, with graphite also present on one side. Its drawn and brushed marks bring different means of observation into the development of the figure. The work’s interest lies in that process, where an abstract subject can acquire a particular visual presence through the artist’s attention to human form and the possibilities of a working surface.
