Description
Nakamura Nakazō appears as a rokujū-rokubu, a pilgrim to Buddhist temples, in this print by Katsukawa Shunshō. The pilgrim carries a large rectangular bundle above the shoulder and a staff, wearing a short pale robe before a dark doorway. The load gives the role a practical weight, making the idea of religious travel tangible through the objects borne by the actor’s represented figure.
Created around 1780, the nishiki-e print uses ink and color on paper. Its appeal lies in the relationship between the recognizable actor and the pilgrim’s guise. Shunshō preserves that particular transformation through the specific guise of a religious traveler. The work makes the role available to close attention, allowing the idea of pilgrimage to acquire an individual human form through Nakazō’s represented appearance.
