Description
The Blue Tablecloth by Max Pechstein transforms a floral still life into a bold arrangement of blue, yellow and green. Painted in 1918, the work places a vase of flowers above a richly patterned cloth, using strong outlines and broad color areas to give ordinary objects an energetic presence. The tall composition carries the eye from the patterned foreground up into the bouquet.
Pechstein was a German Expressionist associated with the Brücke group, and his use of color here does more than describe the objects. Contrasting hues and decorative forms give the tabletop a lively, almost rhythmic character. This giclée reproduction is a colorful choice for anyone drawn to expressive flower paintings and still lifes with a strong visual presence.
