Description
The House with the Cracked Walls stands amid pale rocks and dense vegetation, its warm facade split by a conspicuous dark fissure. Angled branches and sloping ground surround the upright building, while a cool blue sky opens behind it. The contrast gives the small house a curious mixture of stability and vulnerability.
Painted by Paul Cézanne in 1892–94, the scene belongs to his sustained attention to the countryside near Aix-en-Provence. Broad, interlocking touches of color link stone, foliage, and masonry. The abandoned structure becomes part of the landscape’s shifting geometry rather than a merely picturesque subject.
