Description

Édouard Manet’s The Little Girl presents a small profile with striking economy. The child turns to the left, her dark hair and lightly indicated shoulder creating a compact shape against the pale sheet. With little surrounding setting, the face’s outline and the relationship between head and clothing become the main sources of interest.

Made in 1861–62 with etching and drypoint, the print balances delicate contours against darker accents in the hair. Those differences give the portrait substance without making it feel heavily modeled or ceremonious. Manet allows the open paper to remain an active part of the image, keeping the girl’s presence immediate and uncluttered. The result feels like a brief, attentive encounter, preserved through a few marks that carry more character than their small scale might suggest.
