Description
The Opening of the Seventh Seal, from The Apocalypse, is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates the example associated with this catalog record to 1511. Its subject belongs to the unfolding visions of the Book of Revelation, joining heavenly authority with events in the world below.
A radiant central figure and surrounding angels occupy the upper portion, while layered clouds and the earthly landscape carry the eye downward. Trumpets, raised gestures and contrasting areas of dark hatching give the scene a sense of gathering tension. The Opening of the Seventh Seal demonstrates Dürer’s ability to organize a complex religious narrative within a single composition, using line and light to connect its different levels. It forms part of his Apocalypse cycle.
