Description
Title page of Divers Trophées introduces a world of elaborate antique armor with two winged children supporting an oval laurel wreath. Around its sweeping inscription, helmets, shields, weapons, and animal forms rise in a dense, theatrical arrangement. Pale bodies and lettering stand out against the finely hatched shadows.
Made in 1651, René Lochon’s engraving belongs to a series drawn by Charles Errard after Polidoro da Caravaggio’s decorations for the façade of Palazzo Milesi in Rome. Its exuberant ornament turns military trophies into an imaginative display of texture, movement, and invention.
