Description
Trophy with Two Ewers arranges ornate vessels on either side of a central grouping of draped armor and a helmet. Their outward-facing contours give the drawing a balanced spread, while the smaller decorative details keep the symmetry from becoming rigid. Dark ink passages and softer wash distinguish the individual forms, leaving a quieter area of paper below the concentrated ornament.
The sheet is catalogued as a drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio and dated broadly between 1600 and 1800. Its pen work, grayish-brown wash and traces of graphite preserve several stages of the design’s construction. The relation to an earlier artistic model is part of its identity, while the drawing’s own handling allows the forms to be followed as an ornamental ensemble rather than as isolated pieces of still life.
