Description
Frieze of Trophies is an undated pen-and-wash drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio. An elaborate helmet forms the center of the arrangement, its face opening set beneath a rising feathered ornament. Shields and pieces of armor extend to either side, giving the military objects a decorative relationship. Brown ink and wash strengthen the different surfaces while keeping the ensemble connected through its changing contours.
A frieze asks the eye to travel, comparing one grouping with the next while keeping the overall rhythm in view. Here, the trophy motif brings associations of display and commemoration into that decorative framework. The sheet is undated, and the qualified attribution identifies it as a transmission of Polidoro’s imagery through another hand. Its appeal lies in the way discrete ornamental forms can acquire continuity, becoming an organized visual passage rather than a collection of unrelated details.
