Description
Trophy with Two Vases places decorated vessels on either side of a central helmet in a drawing after Polidoro da Caravaggio. Draped forms descend beneath the helmet, giving the arrangement a strong middle axis against which the vessels balance. The broad, symmetrical design invites attention to the differences between individual objects while allowing their outlines to form a coherent ornamental display on the open sheet.
Black ink and reddish-brown wash work over traces of graphite, establishing both the design’s lines and its broader areas of tone. Dated broadly to 1600–1800, the drawing follows Polidoro’s earlier ornamental language through another maker’s hand. The work makes that process of interpretation visible in its material treatment. Its appeal lies in how the objects become a single arrangement, giving two recognizable vessels a role within a larger pattern of emphasis and balance.
