Description
In Truffier and Moreno, a pale woman at the right gestures toward a seated, dark-clothed man on the left within a theatrical setting. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec portrays Truffier and Moreno in Les Femmes Savantes, giving their shared scene a clear relationship between differing positions. The encounter concentrates attention on the figures together rather than treating them as separate actor portraits.
The 1893 lithograph uses crayon, brush, spatter and scraping, printed in black on wove paper. Those different means of mark-making bring a varied surface to the theatrical subject. The work turns an event intended for performance into a lasting visual form, allowing the viewer to consider the pair at another pace and to return to the particular encounter beyond the duration of the scene.
