Description
Alphonse Mucha’s Zodiac brings a celestial theme into the flowing lines and sumptuous decoration of Art Nouveau. A woman in profile wears an elaborate jeweled headdress, her long hair sweeping across a circular band of astrological signs. Warm peach, muted green and rich ornamental details create an image that feels both graceful and commanding.
Designed in 1896 for the Paris printer Champenois, the composition began as a company calendar. Léon Deschamps, editor of La Plume, subsequently acquired distribution rights for the magazine’s 1897 calendar. Its appeal extended beyond its practical purpose: Mucha’s design appeared in several variants, including decorative panels without calendar text.
This version of Zodiac lets the intricate composition take center stage. The symbols surrounding the figure echo the curves of her hair and jewelry, while the patterned border holds the design together like an architectural frame. It is an inviting choice for anyone drawn to vintage illustration, celestial imagery and the elegance of Mucha’s decorative art.
