Description

Katsukawa Shunshō presents Bandō Mitsugorō I standing before a diagonal railing in a long gold-yellow outer robe. A red inner pattern adds a brighter rhythm beneath the broad garment, while the actor bends a hand near the torso. The figure’s composed stance lets these contrasts of color, cloth and surrounding line give the portrait its theatrical presence.

Made around 1778, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. The role’s connection to a group gives the portrait a different character from an isolated stage likeness: Mitsugorō appears as someone whose identity also depends on other performers. Shunshō preserves that relationship without supplying uncertain names or actions for figures beyond this image. The print offers a concentrated encounter with one actor carrying his part in a shared theatrical presentation.
