Description
Eugène Delacroix makes mounting a horse into a spirited encounter between rider and animal. The horse appears side-on toward the left with legs raised, while the man holds its mane as he draws himself upward. Their bodies connect through a changing balance, giving an ordinary equestrian action the intensity of a concentrated struggle for position.
Dated 1824, the work is an aquatint. Delacroix organizes the scene around movement rather than a detached likeness of either figure, letting the horse’s energy and the rider’s effort share the focus. The close arrangement makes each gesture matter to the other body, preserving the instant when mounting is still in progress. The print invites attention to this unsettled relationship, where strength, grip and momentum turn a brief action into a complete pictorial subject.
