Caravaggio, Polidoro da

Explore Polidoro da Caravaggio giclée prints of sacred scenes, classical friezes, ornamental vessels and elaborate armor designs. The collection includes works by Polidoro alongside drawings and engravings after his designs, as well as works catalogued as school or follower; individual product descriptions retain those distinctions.

Polidoro da Caravaggio (about 1499–1543) took his name from his birthplace in Lombardy. He worked in Raphael’s Roman workshop and became known for monochrome paintings on palace façades. Many of these exterior decorations have been lost, but drawings and later prints preserve their compositions. After the Sack of Rome in 1527, he moved south, spending time in Naples before settling in Messina.

His complex arrangements of figures and antique-inspired ornament give the collection a shared visual language without making every work his own drawing. Later interpreters, including the printmakers represented in the Divers Trophées series, helped carry his designs to new audiences. Polidoro is a different artist from Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
